External Communications Manager, Saint-Gobain North America, Valley Forge, PA

Position Description:

• To develop strategies to raise Saint-Gobain’s profile and strengthen its corporate image in the United States and Canada in relation to key target audiences and external stakeholders.

• To ensure consistency and accuracy in the way in which Saint-Gobain is presented to the outside world.

• To measure and evaluate impact of external relations strategy on Saint-Gobain’s brand.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

1. Develop an external communications strategy to strengthen Saint-Gobain’s image and reputation in North America, maximizing awareness of the company and its “Habitat” business strategy among key audiences and stakeholders:

• Assist in the development of consistent and cohesive messaging across all communications vehicles
• Work on projects arising out of the Habitat Steering Committee and any habitat marketing sub-committees

2. Create, manage and execute a proactive media relations strategy covering print and on-line media:

• In particular, develop “regional” media relations campaigns, focusing on areas of the country where Saint-Gobain has “clusters” of businesses
• Work with individual business units to ensure we maximize media coverage for specific high profile projects / activities / news
• Regularly review and update the Saint-Gobain protocol on dealing with the media
• Identify and organize media training as appropriate for identified spokespeople
• Provide media relations counsel to executives and individual businesses
• Ensure Paris head office is consulted and informed about key media events in North America

3. Provide PR support for Saint-Gobain’s public outreach to regulators, government officials, elected representatives and community leaders at a local, state and national level:

• Research and develop materials (literature, PowerPoint, websites) to present Saint-Gobain to target audiences
• Organize visits to Saint-Gobain plants and other locations for elected representatives and community leaders as required
• Maintain lists of business and trade associations with whom Saint-Gobain is involved. Act as a liaison between business associations such as the Conference Board, Chambers of Commerce, etc, and Saint-Gobain executives

4. Develop a plan for maximizing Saint-Gobain’s online presence:

• Manage Saint-Gobain website for North America, continuously update content
• Develop new sections for the website, focusing particularly on sustainability, habitat, people & culture, recruitment
• Monitor Saint-Gobain’s on-line presence and develop a plan for increasing our use of social media

5. Crisis communications support:

• Support Vice President Communications and business units in managing issues which present a threat to Saint-Gobain’s business or reputation
• Continuously review and update crisis communications policy and manual
• Organize crisis management training as appropriate

6. Develop the activities of the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation and serve as the point-person for corporate social responsibility:

• Maximize publicity arising from Saint-Gobain donations to non-profit organizations, both regionally and nationally
• Identify “habitat” oriented organizations with whom Saint-Gobain could develop long term partnerships in the non-profit sector
• Contribute ideas for increasing employee engagement in the Foundation’s activities (eg. volunteering)
• Provide ideas and support to help individual Saint-Gobain locations improve their community relations outreach

7 Support Human Resources in developing a Saint-Gobain employer brand:

• Create a communications plan for developing the Saint-Gobain employer brand in North America
• Assist Human Resources executives in communications outreach to key universities
• Produce materials to support and define Saint-Gobain’s employment proposition

8 Contribute to communication and education on diversity:

• Contribute ideas for educating employees on diversity
• Produce standard communications materials that define Saint-Gobain’s approach to diversity, particularly for use with external audiences

9 Manage Saint-Gobain sponsorships:

• Provide recommendations for sponsorships
• Develop and manage a sponsorship budget

Additional position information:

Position will be responsible for External Communications budget. Primary areas of spend are development of publicity materials, sponsorships, and contracts with external agencies. This is a new position, with responsibility for creating or developing new strategies and systems for Saint-Gobain’s external relations activities and for delivering measurable results.

Other:
1. Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related business field

2. Minimum five years’ experience in a marketing or communications department, preferably for a large multinational company

3. Excellent knowledge of communications tools and techniques, especially social media and media relations

4. Solid computer literacy, especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel

5. Good presentation skills
6. Must be business-focused, with a concern for cost effectiveness
7. Must have strong project management ability
8. Must have attention to detail and a concern for quality
9. Must be able to work well under pressure while maintaining composure and be able to manage multiple priorities.
10. Must be able to assimilate knowledge about Saint-Gobain companies and their businesses quickly.
11. Must be able to maintain confidentiality (can be exposed to sensitive company information, such as marketing plans and financial information).
12. Must be willing to travel across the United States and Canada. Occasional travel to Europe will be required
