Overview

In a recent survey, communication professionals said they believe they’re perceived as not adding value, don’t have enough time to be more strategic, they’re too much “in the weeds,” and their roles are reactive rather than proactive.

IABC Fellow Jim Shaffer will join us on Wed., May 9 to explain ways to break down those perceptions and capitalize on opportunities to add more value by shifting from tactical doers to strategic advisers. This shift increases work directed at improving business results and decreases work that doesn’t.

Based on more than 30 years working with business leaders and communication practitioners, Jim will discuss three deliverables business leaders want from a strategic adviser and how you can begin the process of delivering them immediately.

  • First, they want someone to make a positive impact on their business. Jim pioneered performance-based communication which focuses on delivering measurable results and value. One communication department Jim worked with improved sales by 23 percentwhile generating a 1,440 percent ROI.
  • Second, clients want to work with people who understand their business. They want help developing strategies, leading their thinking about the future, joining them for brainstorming sessions and helping them understand how they compare to others within and outside their industries.
  • Third, the strategic adviser/client relationship must be based on trust. When clients trust you, they’ll continue asking for your advice, act on your recommendations, involve you on more strategic issues, respect you and refer you. Jim will discuss the five things you need to do to build that trust.

About the Speaker

Jim Shaffer is an internationally recognized business advisor, leadership coach, author, speaker and leader of the Jim Shaffer Group, a team of seasoned advisers devoted to improving strategy execution through strong leaders and engaged people. His firm has significantly improved quality, service, sales, safety, turnover, productivity, speed and costs with some returns exceeding 1,500 percent.

Prior to starting the Jim Shaffer Group, Jim was a principal, vice president and global leader of a Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson) center of excellence. He was an architect and leading practitioner of the firm’s change management consulting practice.

His book, The Leadership Solution, immediately became a popular treatise on leadership, change management and creating high performance organizations.

Jim received the International Association of Business Communicators’ prestigious Fellow award, the highest honor IABC bestows on an individual. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and was honored by the Pittsburgh Planning Forum for his contributions to strategic leadership.

A regular contributor to many business publications and frequently quoted in business journals, Jim has taught at the graduate schools of business at George Washington University, Villanova University, the University of St. Thomas and Hamline University. He speaks regularly at leadership groups and professional associations.
