Project Manager

Azavea is seeking an energetic, fast-learning, and creative person to join our team as a Project Manager for a software development team.  If you want a place to grow and learn, this is it.  This will be a full-time, salaried position.

Azavea is a small (about 30 people), customer-focused company that develops web and mobile software projects that serves the public interest, using geographic data visualization and analysis to aid decision-making and build communities.  We are looking for talented, creative people who are interested in working in a growing company and contributing to a range of geography-related software projects.  A few examples include:

o UrbanForestMap: – An implementation of our open source OpenTreeMap project for engaging the public in the task of managing the urban forest.
o PhillyHistory: – searchable historic photos and maps.
o Priority Places: – interactive business siting tools for economic development.
o HunchLab: – advanced spatial-temporal analysis and forecasting for law enforcement agencies.
o DistrictBuilder – – An open source web app for engaging the public with the legislative redistricting process.
o Emergency Medical Center Locator: – an iOS application for finding emergency medical care.

What do we mean by a ‘Project Manager’?  We are looking for a person that combines a mix of talents, skills, and common sense, but not necessarily someone with PMP certification.  While we have a fairly open-ended definition for this position and realize that many types of individuals could fit it, we are looking for someone with attention to detail and excellent communication, writing and networking skills as well as a strong technical background.  Ideally, this person also has the energy and drive to inspire co-workers to attain goals on time and under budget, and pursue excellence.  Your initial project management activities will focus primarily on a professional services team with a broad array of civic and public service software applications that cover domains from public health to labor markets and homelessness to law enforcement.  Depending on your skills, interests and background, your activities may include:

o Execute and implement the steps of a full project lifecycle – discovery, strategy, design, implementation and support.
o Manage day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope:  work with software developers, business development staff and clients to keep projects on time and ensure high quality deliverables.
o Create and execute project plans and revised to meet changing needs and requirements.
o Work with other members of management and executive team to prioritize features and manage project budget.
o Contribute to writing and assembly of technical proposals and research-oriented grant proposals.
o Create project status reports, budgets and cost proposals.
o Facilitate team meetings and keep project team informed.
o Mentor team members to support their learning and professional growth.
o Communicate effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions.
o Communicate relevant project information with management and executive teams.
o Identify areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions.
o Identify and pursue business development and “add-on” sales opportunities as they relate to a specific project.
o Work with executive and business development staff to develop business plans and company strategy.
o Identify and mitigate team communication problems.
o Remove impediments to teams operating productively.
o Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.
Here’s what we’re looking for
o Experience overseeing the development of a software projects.
o Ability to write and speak about technical topics to both colleagues and non-technical audiences.
o Possess general understanding in the areas of application programming, database and system design and geospatial analysis.
o Fluency with core web technology concepts (e.g. JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, and JSON, etc.).
o You are a resourceful – you are willing to take the materials and tools at hand to get things done.
o Strong public speaking skills.

A plus:
o Some experience with GIS technology, either Esri ArcGIS or open source GIS products.
o Good knowledge of both geographic data and relational databases.
o Understanding of agile software development concepts.
