Digital Communications Specialist

American Water – Voorhees, NJ
Responsible for directly supporting the strategic needs for the
company’s internal communications vehicles and participating/managing
projects focused within Internal Communications. Works with employees at all levels to develop and coordinate engaging and dynamic content for MySource and Splash TV, particularly.

Key Accountabilities:
Directly supports the communications needs and leads communications
projects within the Corporate Communications and External Affairs team,
specifically Internal Communications. Provides strategic communications
counsel as it relates to effective use of different communication
vehicles, including the corporate intranet, digital TV network, and
email newsletter (NYNTK). Assists in development of integrated
communications strategies and tactics that are aligned with and mutually reinforced by American Water’s vision, values and strategies. (40%)

Internal online support: Works with the Director Internal Communications to manage and support corporate intranet and other digital communications. Develops and maintains intranet content ensuring all information is current and relevant to employee needs. Content updates include but are not limited to writing, editing and uploading copy and photos, posting news releases, presentations, video, case studies, etc.

Works with members of internal and external web support teams to assess
content needs, design departmental websites, microsites and various
elements for American Water’s existing internal web properties.

Work with state companies and functional areas to produce and update
relevant internal pages. At times, may be asked to produce brief video
content for use on American Water’s web site, intranet and blogs.

Will also provide creative design and layout for various internal and
external email, newsletters and announcements. The above tasks require
developing and maintaining relationships with corporate functional and
business personnel to proactively research topics and gather content.

May require coordinating plans and responses with department managers/directors.

Also responsible for training internal clients on the use of intranet
content management system.

On a daily basis, actively manage Internal Communications department
mailboxes and provide professional, immediate responses to inquiries.

May require coordinating responses with department managers/directors.
Internet Support: As needed, will provide back-up support as needed for
American Water’s external web site. Requires coordination with business
units and other members of the communications team to ensure all
information is current and relevant to external audiences. Content
updates include but are not limited to writing, editing or adding copy
and photos, posting news releases, presentations, video, case studies,
etc. Acts as liaison with divisional/state team members to ensure all
internet processes and procedures are followed as well as ensure
consistency across all subsidiary web pages. (5%)

Internal Communications Project Leadership: Manage projects related to
Intranet and SplashTV implementation. Researches web industry and
utility industry communications trends. Manages relationships between
Internal Communications and vendors, internal clients and Information
Technology colleagues and will be responsible for assigning tasks
related to project work. Develops internal communications plans for a
variety of special projects as well as timelines in coordination with
Corporate Communications and External Affairs Department. Strong writing and planning support required for internal communications projects. Also assists in coordination and oversees printing and other fulfillment projects for Internal Communications. (15%)

Education: Bachelor of Arts, Communications (or related field).

Knowledge: Strong technical capability, specifically for website and intranet updates.

Knowledge of integrated communications planning and execution.

Understanding of matrix environment, a plus.

Comprehensive communications knowledge and experience with demonstrated
expertise in implementing digital communications programs.

Excellent working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe
Creative (Photoshop, Illustrator) applications.

Familiarity with project management work and meets all necessary

3-5 years internal/corporate/employee communications experience with
content management tools and web-based writing.

Must submit writing and design samples.

Writing test required.

Work Environment: Corporate office environment.

Travel Requirements: Travel may be necessary occasionally (15%) in the United States to ensure a thorough understanding of team’s needs and the organization.

Strong computer ability — able to work with content management systems
and software similar to SharePoint and Documentum.

Understands web trends and can articulate their application to American
Water’s website and intranet.

Understands web, journalistic and other forms of professional writing
and is able to demonstrate ability.

Strong and demonstrated communications skills (writing, editing, verbal
communication, etc.).

Creative graphic design skills to complement strong writing abilities
for effective visual/multimedia communication.

Possesses understanding of integrated communications and ability to
develop strategic communications plans to support “big picture” in all

Demonstrated project management skills.

Ability to work within a matrix environment as a shared resource,
supporting multiple supervisors and corporate functions.

Ability to work under minimal supervision. Prioritizes and reprioritizes extremely well.

Ability to make independent decisions and ask for guidance when needed.

Works with great deal of flexibility and willingness to work for the
benefit of the whole team.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills (e.g., tact/diplomacy,
cooperation, teamwork, negotiation). Works well with all business units
and regions. Ability to be a liaison between department and all others
including vendors and other outside resources.
